Like Owen Wilson himself, Drillbit Taylor has a loose, shaggy-dog appeal. Wilson plays a homeless ex-soldier who wants to emigrate illegally to Canada–and when three misfit high-school students hire him to protect them from bullies, he sets out to fleece them for the money he needs to get away. Naturally, this being a formulaic crowd-pleaser, he bonds with the kids and discovers that maybe his life isn’t so worthless after all. Fortunately for moviegoers, the creators of Drillbit Taylor (including co-writer Seth Rogen, star of Knocked Up) have the wit to tweak the formula and give what could have been prefabricated and bland some grit, surprises, and genuine laughs (as well as an allusion to this movie’s obvious inspiration, the 1980 teen-movie classic My Bodyguard). While nowhere near as funny (or as rude) as Rogen’s previous co-writing effort, the dorkily sublime Superbad, Drillbit Taylor benefits from a similar grasp of the genuine cravings and frustrations of adolescence. Still, it’s Wilson’s movie, and his slacker-romantic rhythm gives the hmor its swing. Also featuring Leslie Mann (The 40-Year-Old Virgin), who is woefully underutilized as Wilson’s love interest. One sneaky bit of casting: The main bully is played by Alex Frost, who played an unhappy teen driven to shoot up his school in director Gus Van Sant’s Elephant. –Bret Fetzer

Entertaining![]()
“Drillbit Taylor” is enough of a film to keep you interested for about an hour and forty, but that’s just about it. Wilson’s performance was just enough to cut the mustard, but nothing that really stands out. Wilson has done much better work in the past and in this outing he seems to be more of an observer to the plot rather than a catalyst. The true stars of this film are the young kids who play the protagonists.
The story itself is pretty predictable. We’ve seen this kind of thing before, so the ending really isn’t much of a surprise.
I did like Adam Baldwin’s cameo appearance that directly plugs his feature film debut in “My Bodyguard” back in 1980 (a MUCH better film, by the way) and I also appreciated Wilson’s line that referenced 1982’s “Blade Runner” (”I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe!”).
All in all, the average viewer will probably enjoy “Drillbit Taylor”, but will probably not care to watch it again in the future.
just okay…![]()
I almost avoided this movie because of the bad reviews. The only thing that made me pick it up was an extended preview that looked interesting.
The first 30 minutes is the reason that I gave this movie three stars. That section of the movie was actually very funny.
Unfortunately the last hour dragged and leaves you frustrated thinking about what could’ve been.
The three kids in this movie are hilarious. Almost like the little brothers of the two guys from Superbad.
It’s listed as unrated, but don’t let that fool you. It’s really not that rough.
It’s just okay.
You’ll like it if you’re a teenager…![]()
Being in high school, I loved this movie. I think it was geared toward a teenage audience and most of the humor in it is meant for teenagers. If you are in high school, you will probably love this movie. Adults, maybe not so much.
The acting was excellent, and I liked the story line too. I thought it was overall a really funny movie that I plan on purchasing.
